In Memoriam: Ronald E. Groshaw

(The Toronto Star) Dr. Ron­ald Eric Groshaw passed away on July 21, 2025, at Eto­bicoke Gen­eral Hos­pital, at the age of 95. He was pre­de­ceased by his son, George Bain (2003). Beloved hus­band to Bar­bara Jean for 65 years. Father to Eric (Tracie). Grand­father to Chris­topher (Hil­ary); great­grand­father to Samuel; and grand­father to Philip (Kaitlin). Ron grew up on the fam­ily farm near Moore­field, Ontario.

While atten­ding the Uni­versity of West­ern Ontario, hos­til­it­ies began in Korea. Ron enlis­ted in the R.C.A.F while con­tinu­ing his stud­ies for a doc­tor­ate in medi­cine. Ron served with the 408 Squad­ron in the Arctic at Res­ol­ute Bay. Upon com­ple­tion of his tour of duty, he did post-gradu­ate study in Oph­thal­mo­logy. He opened a private prac­tice in Weston, Ontario. Ron was appoin­ted to the teach­ing staff at Uni­versity of Toronto. He served as Chief Oph­thal­mo­lo­gist at Eto­bicoke Gen­eral Hos­pital and served on staff at St. John’s, West Park and Sunnybrook Hos­pital.

Ron joined the Masonic com­munity in 1959 in Con­es­togo Lodge No. 295, Drayton. TPGM Toronto Grand Lodge of Perfection Valley of Toronto 1974 – ’75, and coroneted 33° HIG 1976. Ron was Past Grand Mas­ter of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accep­ted Masons of Canada in the province of Ontario in 1983, but, prior, was Grand Senior Warden 1976-77. He was a PM of The Heritage Lodge No. 730 GRC (1981), and laid the cornerstone at the lodge in Black Creek (1983) and enjoyed its rededication 40 years later in 2023. Ron was also a mem­ber of Rameses Shrine #33 and was the Imper­ial Potentate of the Temple of Rameses in 1991, as well as AAONMS Royal Order of Jesters, Royal Order of Scotland, member of Ontario College SRIC (1997), Honorary member of Ontario College No. 87 (SRIA) and Honorary member of Georgina Lodge No. 343.

The Ronald E. Groshaw Masonic Centre was dedicated to honour his name and legacy in Brampton, 2024.

Recre­ation­ally, Ron enjoyed cot­tage life with his fam­ily. His hob­bies included sail­ing, golf and ski­ing. In his later years, Ron enjoyed being a “tree sur­geon” at the lake, and he was vora­cious reader and had a pas­sion for all types of lit­er­at­ure.

A private fam­ily inter­ment will take place at Beth­esda Cemetery, Moore­field. A cel­eb­ra­tion of life will take place at a later date.
